The Calendar of the Church Year begins anew each year on The First Sunday of Advent. This year, The First Sunday of Advent is December 1, 2019. On that day, we enter into a new year of the three-year cycle of Eucharistic Lectionary Readings (Year A—The Year of St. Matthew). The new year’s Mass Readings are listed for every Sunday and Holy Day (Major Feast) of the year, beginning on p. 889 of your BCP. Please note that the Holy Day Mass Readings are all found after Year C’s readings, beginning on p. 921 of your BCP. On the First Sunday of Advent, we also enter into a new year of the two-year cycle of Daily Office Lectionary Readings (Year Two). The new year’s Daily Office Readings are listed for every day of the year, beginning on p. 937 of your BCP. The Year Two readings are so marked at the bottom of the page and are always found on the right hand, or odd-numbered, page.
Advent brings changes to our liturgy. On The First Sunday of Advent, we begin Mass with The Great Litany, put away the Gloria for Advent, and use a different form for the Prayers of the People. All of these changes to our liturgy heighten the sense of our joyful expectation of the coming of Christ at Christmas, which we celebrate for twelve days, beginning at our Christmas Eve Vigil Masses.
Keeping Advent and Christmas booklets are available on the table in the Narthex. Feel free to take a copy for your family.
Advent is a traditional time for Confessions. You may make yours, without appointment, in the Library on Mondays and Thursdays, 5:00-5:30 p.m. and on Fridays 10:00-10:30 a.m.
