The purpose of the Church of the Holy Apostles is to glorify God through worship, discipleship, stewardship, fellowship, and love. Stewardship describes the relationship understood between Christians and the world around them. We understand that all that we have and all that we are belongs to God. “We are his people, and the sheep of his pasture” (Psalm 100:2). We therefore realize that we are expected to use the resources God has given us to his honor and glory. Those resources consist of our time, talents, and treasure.
The standard for financial giving in the Church is the tithe, 10%. If you are not currently tithing, you ought to be working toward it. The first step is to discover what percentage of your income you are contributing. Once you know that, you will be able to figure how to increase your level of giving. For many people a good strategy is to increase the current amount by 10% of that amount every year. So, if you were giving $100 per week last year, the new pledge would be $110 per week. Our parish is supported entirely by the contributions we receive. We have no endowment. Consequently, if there is some aspect of our parish life that is not funded, it is because we have not given enough to make it a reality. We can do, as a parish, whatever we decide to support. We ask our members to make an annual pledge for the support of the parish. Our fiscal year is the calendar year. The pledge is helpful to the vestry in formulating an annual budget. So our custom has been that we ask for pledges in the fall, prior to formulating the budget. Certainly we welcome new pledges at any time. We keep pledge cards on the table in the narthex. Just pick one up and fill it in and place it in the alms basin when the offering is collected during the service. Likewise, if your financial situation changes and you find you must reduce your pledge, you ought to. Just let our treasurer know, or fill in a new card and put it in the Sunday offering.
